Kuzma’s Fish Market is a full service fresh fish market and eatery, fusing the best of Asian and European fish markets.
Ken ‘Kuzma’ Hewitt has been working in the fish business since he was 7 years old. His passion for the industry was born from his time working for his grandmother’s West Hill Fish market in West Seattle.
Opened in 1972 on California Ave, West Hill Fish Market was an integral part of Ken’s upbringing. Summers, weekends and afterschool time were spent here, first as a young kid folding newspapers and doing odd tasks, until his pre-teen years when he graduated into really learning to handle and prep the fish.
When his grandmother closed the West Hill Fish Market 13 years later, Ken and his younger brother David moved on to Mutual Fish on Rainier Ave., aka the college of fish mongers Seattle’s #1 fish market. Ken spent 15 years there, absorbing the Japanese culture, cutting style, and products, before moving on in 2000 to become the seafood department manager of Uwajimaya Seattle (Beaverton, Bellevue, Renton and kai market).
During those 18 years at Uwajimaya, Ken was the driving force in building a very successful and efficient seafood program. He visited and trained in Japan at several fish markets, and spearheaded the opening of Uwajimaya’s largest #1 full service fresh fish shop & retail store.
The opening of Kuzma’s Fish Market in March 2018 is the fulfillment of a lifelong goal, born in his Croatian grandmother’s fish market as a kid, intensified over decades of hard work and long hours managing large seafood operations.
